Analytical Chemistry

Accredited Verification Laboratory for Chemical Warfare Agents

In the STS 0019 test centre, we develop methods for processing and analysing environmental, material and biomedical samples. We use state-of-the-art equipment and validated methods to isolate and identify chemical warfare agents (CWA), their precursors, breakdown products and biomarkers as well as other toxic chemicals. In addition, we are constantly expanding our analytical databases.

Through our research activities, we are continuously developing our expertise, and our professional competence is regularly reviewed within the framework of international interlaboratory tests.

Protection of the Swiss population

In incidents involving chemical warfare agents (CWA), we investigate suspected samples for CWA and other toxic compounds on behalf of the Swiss Confederation, cantonal authorities and the DDPS Emergency Response Team (EEVBS). In large-scale incidents, we are supported by specialists from the Swiss Armed Forces’ NBC Defence Laboratory 1, who were trained by us.

Supporting the OPCW and other international organisations

As a designated laboratory of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), we examine suspect samples and support the OPCW in monitoring compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). We also contribute significantly to the further development of the OPCW Central Analytical Database (OCAD), which is the reference library for OPCW on-site inspections. We also advise and support other international organisations on issues related to chemical warfare agents.

Our neutrality and our professional expertise are recognised and appreciated worldwide. We have been participating in missions to investigate CWA deployment and analysing suspect samples from all over the world since 1984.
