Spiez Laboratory has again been designated as a collaborating center for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from January 2021. The two organizations have already worked together successfully between 2017 and 2020. The partnership includes on-site measurements, sampling and analytical processes for the study of radionuclides in environmental samples. The objective is also to build capacity within the IAEA's ALMERA network (ALMERA = Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity). The work focuses on the development of analytical processes for the study of radioactive substances in environmental and material samples. For example, support is provided for the monitoring of samples taken from the coastal waters of Fukushima Prefecture (Japan) and the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. In this field, technical gaps in the classification of demolition materials are to be filled in the coming years.

Collaborating centers are scientific institutions such as laboratories, universities or research institutes that collaborate with the IAEA, particularly in the fields of environmental protection, food safety, resource management or public health. Currently, 46 institutes have been designated around the world, including the EPF Lausanne in the field of nuclear safety research.
